The 4L80E Transmission. This cryptic description is GM's way of saying this is an automatic transmission with four forward speeds designed for longitudinal (i.e. RWD) use. The "80" references higher torque capacity (compared with a 60, for example), while the "E" defines this as an electronically controlled transmission.

The 4L80-E (and similar 4L85-E) was a series of automatic transmissions from General

Motors. Designed for longitudinal engine configurations, the series included 4

forward gears. It was an evolution of the Turbo-Hydramatic 400, first produced in

October, 1963. 4L80-Es were optioned only in Chevrolet/GMC pickups, vans, and

commercial vehicles, and the Hummer H1.

The "MT1" 4L80-E is able to handle engines with up to 440 ft·lbf (597 N·m) of

torque. Final drive ratios include 3.42, 3.73, and 4.10.

The 4L80E was rated to max GVWR of 18,000 (Axle and vehicle dependent)[3]

Applications:

1991–2013 Chevrolet C/K/Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra V8

1991–2013 Chevrolet/GMC Suburban/GMC Yukon

1995–2003 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon

1991–2002 Chevrolet Van/Chevrolet Express/GMC Savana

2002–2006 Chevrolet Avalanche V8 8.1L

The 4L80E is the successor to the Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission. The 4L80E came

thirty years later in the 1990s. Doctor Steve of Doctor Steve’s Transmission Clinic

told us that, “There isn’t another transmission that has had the same design in

production for 50 years!” These are four-speed transmissions outfitted with four

forward gears and one reverse gear, are electronically controlled, and have a 25%

overdrive gear.

4L80E Specifications

The 4L80E has a max torque rating of 440 lb.-ft. of torque, giving it a max load

capacity of 18,000 pounds. The gearing to move such a heavy load is a 2.48 first

gear, 1.48 second, 1.00 third, and 0.75 overdrive.

These transmissions can be found behind 4.3 to 8.1-liter gas engines and 6.5 to 6.6

-litre diesel engines. They are electronically controlled, unless modified, and the

housing itself is die cast aluminum. A few stock-applications include the Chevrolet

Avalanche, Silverado (2500HD and 3500 series), Express vans, and Suburbans. They are

also installed in GMC Sierras, Yukon XLs, and Savana vans. Some Hummers also ran

them as well.
